Demand the University of Louisiana System Move Classes 100% Online For Fall Term

Dr. James B. Henderson, CEO & President, University of Louisiana System

As COVID-19 cases in Louisiana continue to rise and Governor John Bel Edwards is keeping Louisiana at Phase 2 of the reopening plan, the University of Louisiana System's schools are moving ahead with returning to in-person classes for the Fall 2020 term. The ULS covers:

  • Grambling State University,
  • Louisiana Tech University,
  • McNeese State University,
  • Nicholls State University,
  • Northwestern State University,
  • Southeastern University of Louisiana,
  • University of Louisiana at Lafayette,
  • University of Louisiana at Monroe, and
  • The University of New Orleans

All of these schools may individually create Return-to-Campus plans but follow the guidance of ULS. ULS has a Return-to-Campus plan, but when reached for comment informed us that it is not public.

As students, faculty, staff, and campus members, we are concerned about the lack of oversight from ULS and the fact that so many schools are returning to in-person classes in just a few weeks. Regardless of cleaning, social distancing, and masking practices, it is still too dangerous to go back to the way things were before the pandemic. If universities cannot hold in-person graduation ceremonies and ULS administrators are still working from home due to safety concerns, why do they think it's safe to send entire campuses back to school?

By signing this petition, you are helping demand that ULS and their universities protect their campus communities and keep classes 100% online until COVID-19 cases are at much lower levels. We are also building a coordinated call campaign to contact the ULS office directly and demand classes be moved online. This Calling Day of Action will be on Wednesday, August 12, 2020 for as long as the ULS offices are open. If you are interested in participating, please leave your name, email, and phone number on this petition to receive updates about the Calling Day of Action.

We pay thousands of dollars every year to this system as campus members and we deserve their utmost care and protection.

Thank you.

Dr. Henderson,

We as students, faculty, staff, campus community members, ULS alumni, and family demand that the University of Louisiana System MANDATE courses be offered 100% online until the COVID-19 pandemic has reached more manageable levels. No single death is an acceptable sacrifice for returning to business as usual and universities should not return to in-person classes until new cases in Louisiana are consistently below 100 per day. We are concerned for our safety and the safety of our friends and family.

Dr. Henderson, use your power as CEO and President of the University of Louisiana System to mandate 100% online classes until we can guarantee the safety of every individual returning to campus. Further, ensure in keeping classes online that all faculty and staff members are paid and their jobs secure throughout this ongoing crisis.
