Momentum Coordinating Group (NCG)
DEMOCRATISE MOMENTUM
We
are active members of Momentum promoting Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership
of the Labour Party and the 2017 manifesto. Members have been
increasingly concerned about the lack of democracy in Momentum. This
has come to a head with the creation of slates, most recently for the
election of 6 additional members of the Party’s National
Constitutional Committee (NCC). The NCC is important because it deals
with disciplinary cases, membership issues and exclusions. While we
welcomed that Momentum invited submissions from members for these 6
posts, we are disturbed that the subsequent process for choosing a
slate was less than transparent, with an unknown panel making the
final choice.
Left group negotiations about the current NCC slate broke down regarding the inclusion of Stephen Marks, who is an Oxford East CLP member and a member of Jewish Voice for Labour (JVL) Momentum were the only group who didn't want this member to be on the slate. After extended negotiations one slate including Stephen has been agreed.
Momentum members would have been able to evaluate the facts if they had had access to minutes of the National Coordinating Group (NCG) meetings but no minutes have been posted since Sept 2017.
We call on the NCG to post minutes from all past meetings and to pledge to circulate timely notes in the future of minutes, including records of officers and the membership of panels.
We call on the NCG to have an immediate review of how slates are compiled and to seek input from members on how we can act in a more democratic way with regard to nominations and slates.
We call on the NCG to oppose individual opinions that are not in line with Momentum members or do not support Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership of the Labour Party. The NCG must represent the members that voted for them.
We call on the NCG to be accountable and contactable (as promised in their election material) and to carry out a review of the structure and democracy of Momentum with wide spread input from members and make changes accordingly.
Momentum does great work through it's vibrant members please sign this petition so we can push for change on slates and everything to do with democratising Momentum. We are asking for democracy in the Labour party we need to do the same in Momentum. We need approx 4,000 people to support this to get to the next stage.
