This week, 200+ Charlestonians came together for a public forum about how to respond to our deadly drug epidemic.
Sponsored by the WV Council of Churches, the University of Charleston School of Pharmacy, Call to Action for Racial Equality (and many others), the forum united people from all different walks of life. They got to learn about public health best practices from experts like Dr. Lindsay Acree (University of Charleston), Susan Shepard (Manager of the Toronto Drug Strategy Secretariat), and Lois Vance (Director of MAT at Cabin Creek). The discussion was moderated by Sarah Cordwell, who also shared her personal story of being in recovery.
Mayor Danny Jones didn’t attend the forum. Instead, he dismissed the meeting as a “needle rally” in a tweet the next morning.
Our families are suffering everyday. Charleston needs real solutions to our drug epidemic. We need open discussion and new ideas. This is not the first time Mayor Jones has tried to bully people who disagree with him. We hope it will be the last.
We call on both current mayoral candidates to publicly denounce Mayor Jones’s scare tactics and pledge to engage in open dialogue with public health experts, faith leaders, and community members about our drug epidemic.
