Des Plaines City Council: Protect the Minimum Wage & Paid Sick Leave!
Des Plaines City Council & Mayor Bogusz
In October 2016, the Cook County Board of Commissioners passed two ordinances that will gradually raise the minimum wage in Cook County to $13/hour by July 2020 and mandate up to 40 hours of paid sick leave for workers per year. These vital ordinances will provide basic worker benefits, a living wage and sustainable growth in the local economy.
But, now many suburban municipalities are using their "home rule" authority to consider opting-out of both ordinances altogether. Des Plaines will be voting on whether to opt-out on June 5th. Our local elected officials need to hear from their constituents and workers - not just the Chamber of Commerce - if they are going to make the right decision. Please join The People's Lobby in making your voice heard!
Date - New Minimum Wage Without Opt-Out
July 1st 2017 - $10.00 per hour
July 1st 2018 - $11.00 per hour
July 1st 2019 - $12.00 per hour
July 1st 2020 - $13.00 per hour

When fully implemented in 2020, the minimum wage increase will put almost $10,000 more in the pockets of full-time, minimum wage employees. This raise will support our local economy and Des Plaines businesses. The current minimum wage in Illinois of $8.25 is a starvation wage, and I urge you to to end the race to the bottom in our communities.
Low wage workers in Des Plaines have gone far too long without a raise or a sick day and deserve to make enough money to support themselves and their families. I urge you to support the minimum wage and paid sick leave in Cook County. Please vote NO on opting-out on June 5th.
