Don't approve school field trips to Riley's Farm in Oak Glen!

To: Superintendent Mays Kakish and the Beaumont Unified School District Board Members: Susie Lara, Steven Hovey, David Sanchez, Janelle Poulter, and Shawn Mitchell.

The Beaumont Unified School District Board of Trustees board policy 5137 regarding positive school climate states it's "...desires to enhance student learning by providing an orderly, caring, and nurturing educational and social environment in which all students can feel safe and take pride in their school and their achievements. The school environment should be characterized by positive interpersonal relationships among students and between students and staff."

Riley's Farm has been notoriously known for controversial political opinions, misogynistic references to women's bodies, having loaded weapons on their premises, threatening commentary directed to the LGBTQ community, and racially-driven offensive remarks. This is not a location that is appropriate for students to visit for school field trips, particularly when there are many others to choose from. We are lucky to live so close to so many other options that truly offer a sincere learning experience and/or fun activities. Although many schools have identified Riley's Farm as an educational experience with it's civil war re-enactments and gold rush activities, these "shows" don't hold true educational value and have become an "entertainment" alternative for someone's interpretation of historical events.

Some of the statements from James Patrick Riley, owner of Riley's Farm, that reflect the concerns listed above are as follows:

"Gays please shut up. Go back to the closet. Stop making your concerns a national issue." January 7, 2012

"you see, for me, the preponderance of people who side with Trayvon Martin are just almost EXACTLY like the people who side with abortion and Obama and letting diplomats die in Benghazi. Evil SUCKS. I intend to call it exactly what it is---even if it wears a stupid hoodie and sucks skittles." (July 17, 2013)

We, the undersigned parents and community members, urge you to:

Stop any approvals for field trips to Riley's Farm and encourage field trips that are truly rich in a positive atmosphere. Locations that embrace the diversity in our community. Locations are both fun and provide a quality learning experience. Although these trips are clearly optional, it would be unfortunate to have to exclude a child from participating with their peers when they wouldn't need to be excluded if an alternate place was selected instead.

By choosing to stop field trips to Riley's farms, we are sending our children a message that Beaumont USD values do not align with Riley's Farm.
