41% of Americans Live in Poverty

Sometimes we all need a little help, and that is precisely why SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits were created- as a safety net to ensure Americans don't go hungry, but did you know these benefits also help American farmers, too? SNAP prevents poor nutrition from hurting families and provides a strong foundation for U.S. agriculture. So how do families and our family farmers “pull themselves up by their bootstraps” if we keep taking away their boots?

SNAP benefits are temporary and already have strict eligibility requirements and guidelines in place to assist recipients in a move toward self-sufficiency. That is a responsible way to help each other.

Trump’s U.S. Department of Agriculture recently proposed a new rule to limit access to food stamps to households with savings or other assets of any kind. This risks benefits to nearly three million children and families already struggling.

”How are we going to pay for it?”

This is a ridiculous question that only comes up when working families are in need. We know that Federal taxes do not fund spending. Congress can authorize additional spending the same way they do for everything - war, trillion-dollar bank bailouts, natural disasters, etc.- all managed through appropriations.

We are a sovereign nation and one of the wealthiest in the world. As such, our federal government issues our own currency in what is known as a monetarily sovereign system, just as described by Modern Monetary Theory. They know this, too, but would rather you did not, so they could continue the lie implied by, “how are we going to pay for it.”

Just one emergency away...

Most of us are just one emergency away from a crisis, and one in four Americans already struggles with hunger. The most vulnerable among us continue to pay the price. Our homelessness rates at 2.5 million per year for children and the child poverty rates at 15 million, we know new restrictions are not necessary in the richest country in the world.

States can decide to keep SNAP income eligibility low to assist families with housing and childcare costs - the heaviest financial burden - can still receive help affording adequate food with these benefits. This option is less restrictive, so families, seniors, and those with disabilities can have a modest savings or own their own home without losing their SNAP benefits.

The United States citizen listed in this petition and public comment form oppose any proposed change in the rules that put more restrictions on SNAP eligibility in place. This risks benefits to nearly three million children and families already struggling in order to assist recipients in a move toward self-sufficiency.

We are a sovereign nation and one of the wealthiest in the world and yet 41% of Americans Live in Poverty. SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits were created as a safety net to ensure Americans don't go hungry. We know these new restrictions are not necessary.
