Don't Vaporize Brooklyn

Governor Hochul and NYS DEC

Sign the Petition: Tell Governor Hochul & DEC: Don’t Vaporize Brooklyn!

Stop National Grid’s Greenpoint Liquefied Fracked Gas (LNG) Expansion at the head of the NBK Pipeline!

The New York Department of Environmental Conservational (DEC) must make a critical decision whether or not to allow National Grid to build two new dirty fracked gas vaporizers at its Greenpoint facility at the apex of the North Brooklyn pipeline!

These vaporizers will increase air pollution in an environmental justice community and increase greenhouse gas emissions during the climate crisis.

The communities living near National Grid’s Greenpoint facility have suffered from decades of environmental racism. New York State should be working on a plan to decommission the polluting facility, not expand it.

Tell Governor Hochul and the DEC to deny the permit for National Grid’s vaporizers

National Grid has gone out of its way to lie and say these vaporizers have nothing to do with the North Brooklyn Pipeline, but if phase 5 is completed it would literally connect to the Greenpoint facility and allow the company to pump out more fracked gas into its system.

And to add insult to injury, we’d have to pay for the vaporizers through surcharges that will jack up our monthly National Grid bills even more.

We need to make as much noise as we can calling on Governor Hochul and the NYS DEC to stop this disastrous project. We can’t allow National Grid to vaporize our communities and the climate!

Dear Governor Hochul and Commissioner Seggos,

National Grid is proposing to build two new liquified fracked gas (LNG) vaporizers to increase methane gas output from its Greenpoint storage depot. These new fracked gas vaporizers were proposed as part of National Grid’s “Plan B” to the William NESE Pipeline.

The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) said that the Williams Pipeline did not comply with the mandates of the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) and the same is true for any fracked gas projects National Grid has proposed as an alternative.

We urge the DEC to deny the Air State Facility Permit for National Grid’s two new LNG vaporizers, which conflict with the mandates of the CLCPA to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect environmental justice communities.

The vaporizers also violate DEC’s Environmental Justice and Permitting Policy (Commissioner Policy 29) since the Greenpoint facility is located in and near DEC-designated “Potential Environmental Justice Areas” (PEJAs).

The communities living near National Grid’s Greenpoint facility have suffered from decades of environmental racism. New York State should be working on a plan to decommission the polluting facility, not expand it.

This summer we saw climate change kill New Yorkers from record-breaking heat and flooding from Hurricane Ida, and over the past 18 months, we saw COVID disproportionately hit communities that have long been facing health issues from fossil fuel dumping.

The vaporizers will increase emissions and pollution, all on the backs of National Grid customers already struggling to pay utility bills.

You have a moral obligation and legal mandate to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect environmental justice communities. Deny National Grid’s permit.
