All councils in Oxfordshire have declared a climate emergency. There is now an urgent need to make sure that they translate their words into action. Doubling UK woodland cover could help absorb 10% of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions annually as well as bringing significant other benefits to soil quality, flood prevention and natural habitats. Tree cover in Oxfordshire is under 9%, while in the EU it is on average 35%. We have little chance of meeting international climate change agreements unless we plant more trees - starting from now!

We call on all councils within Oxfordshire to commit now to doubling tree cover by 2045, to build this target into development plans, and to develop a tree planting and maintenance programme.
