PETITION: New children's playground on the Downs

The Downs Commitee

This petition calls on the Downs Committee to yield the land to build a new children's playground on the Downs, preferably near the Water Tower and Cafe on Stoke Road.

Why is this petition important?

There is no play equipment within reasonable walking distance for most families living in Clifton Down ward (the area around Whiteladies Road).

There is an excellent set of play equipment at the other end of the Downs, near the Suspension Bridge. However, this is 1.5 miles from the top of Whiteladies Road, which is too far for most young children to walk.

Why will this petition help?

The Downs are managed by the Downs Committee, which is made up of a mixture of Councillors and members of the Merchant Venturers. They are jointly responsible for maintaining and improving the Downs for the enjoyment of all residents of Bristol.

Parents in Clifton Down ward wrote to their local councillor Carla Denyer to ask for a new playground. Councillor Denyer has contacted Downs Committee members, who have said that they would consider it, but first they need to see that there is sufficient demand.

Please sign and share this petition if you want to see a new play area on the Downs, within easy walking distance of Whiteladies Road.

Note: This petition was started during the coronavirus lockdown, at a time when most play equipment is cordoned off to protect our public health. The petitioners understand and support these measures, and only want to see a new playground in use when it is safe to do so.
