Drop the charges against whistleblower Reality Winner
U.S. Department of Justice
The news is still breaking about Reality Winner, an NSA contractor like Edward Snowden who has been arrested by the FBI and charged under the Espionage Act for printing a document regarding hacking of the U.S. election, and mailing it to journalists at The Intercept.
There are lots of questions, but one thing is clear: this woman acted courageously to inform the public and shed light on an issue that affects all of us. Threatening her with a harsh prison sentence sets a dangerous precedent at a time when we need whistleblowers now more than ever.
Pundits are already trying to make this a partisan issue, but it's not. Regardless of your political persuasion, we can all agree that governments should not be able to abuse their power in secret.
