DSPs DESERVE A FAIR WAGE!
Gov. JB Pritzker & The Illinois General Assembly
AFSCME DSPs have made great progress in our fight for fair wages by standing together.
In tough budget years, it’s even more important that we stand together to fight for our fair share and build on our progress.

I’m a direct support professional (DSP) at a community disability agency.
DSPs like me are responsible for the health, hygiene, and mental well-being of nearly 30,000 Illinoisans with disabilities. Cooking, cleaning, bathing, delivering medical care—we do it all.
Despite the progress our industry has made in recent years, wages are still low, which has produced serious understaffing at many of our agencies. This understaffing undermines our mission to provide the best possible care for the people we serve.
It’s hard work, but we love what we do. We love it because we love the individuals we care for. In many cases, we’re their family—and they are ours.
That’s why I urge you to support SB 1617 (Villanueva)/HB 3089 (West), bills that will fully fund disability services and ensure that funding is passed through to workers like me so that we can earn a fair wage. For the good of the people we care for, and for the good of our state.
