Defend Historical Integrity: Oppose One-Sided Armenian Genocide Resolutions in Texas

Advocate for Balanced Historical Representation

We, the undersigned, urge Texas legislators to reconsider and oppose resolutions that present a unilateral perspective on the events of 1915–1923, commonly referred to as the Armenian Genocide. While acknowledging the profound suffering endured by the Armenian people, it's imperative to approach history with a comprehensive lens that includes all affected communities and the complex geopolitical context of the era.

Our Concerns:

Educational Impact: Mandating a singular narrative in educational curricula can marginalize students of Turkish descent, leading to feelings of alienation and misrepresentation.

One-Sided Narratives: Presenting complex historical events from a singular perspective can oversimplify history and exclude the experiences and viewpoints of other affected communities.

Historical Complexity: The late Ottoman period was marked by multifaceted conflicts involving various ethnic groups. Recognizing this complexity ensures a more accurate and inclusive historical account.

Community Relations: Promoting a balanced narrative fosters understanding and unity among diverse communities within Texas.

We urge the Texas Department of Education and local school boards to:

We respectfully request that Texas lawmakers:

Reevaluate Existing Resolutions: Ensure that any legislative measures concerning historical events present a balanced perspective, incorporating multiple viewpoints and scholarly research.

Engage with Diverse Communities: Facilitate open dialogues with Turkish-American, Armenian-American, and other relevant communities to understand their perspectives and concerns.

Promote Inclusive Education: Develop educational materials that reflect the complexity of historical events, encouraging critical thinking and empathy among students.

Curriculum Review: Conduct a thorough review of the current curriculum to identify and address any instances of historical imbalance or exclusion.

Include Turkish-American historians and educators in curriculum development and oversight processes

Foster inclusive classroom environments where students of all backgrounds—especially Turkish-American students—feel safe, respected, and free from cultural or political bias

Promote critical thinking and historical inquiry over simplified or politicized messaging

We are not asking for denial. We are asking for context, fairness, and balance—so that students receive a responsible, well-rounded education grounded in historical truth and intellectual integrity.

Texas's public schools have a duty to promote learning—not ideology. Students deserve the opportunity to engage with the full scope of history, not just the version shaped by political pressure.

Please sign and share this petition. Together, we can restore balance, inclusion, and academic responsibility to Michigan classrooms.
