Everyone Gets a Vote-By-Mail Ballot

Gavin Newsom, Governor of California

Dear Governor Newsom,

Young people in California make up the largest and most diverse generation alive. Yet we turn out to vote at lower rates than older generations due to difficult institutional restrictions young people face while voting - from learning how to register for the first time, to having to re-register every time we move addresses on campus.

This past election cycle we've seen a doubling in youth voter turn-out, yet during the primary elections students faced up to 4 hour lines to vote in Los Angeles.

With the current public health emergency of the COVID-19 pandemic, in addition to the long lines at polling locations limiting students from voting, it seems important more now than ever that our state takes strong action to increase the ease, accessibility, and safety of voters.

That's why we're calling for mail-in-ballots to be sent to every voter in the state of California for the 2020 general election

Yet we turn out to vote at lower rates than older generations due to difficult institutional restrictions young people face while voting - from learning how to register for the first time, to having to re-register every time we move addresses on campus. We can make voting easier for young people by eliminating barriers to voting.
