Fair Elections in Illinois

Illinois lawmakers

With over $200 million spent so far by Rauner and Pritzker,  the Illinois gubernatorial race is set to be the most expensive in our country’s history with up to $156 million of that being self funded.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel has been found to have given 70 percent of his donors this election cycle some benefit from City Hall, ranging from contracts to appointments to zoning approvals. Over the weekend, one of the candidates seeking to defeat Mayor Emanuel handed out hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash from his personal foundation to Chicago residents at a Southside church event that was promoted by his campaign. (Although the facts are still coming out about this event, it appears that at least $100,000 of the money that was given away came out of Governor Rauner’s own pocket.)

When candidates are able to self-fund, accept large sums from wealthy donors in exchange for favors, and buy votes by giving out perks to organizations or every day people, they are not held accountable to their constituents. How is it possible that none of the actions above break the law? We, the people, must demand better.

We want systemic change not temporary bandages. We need to build a democracy where everyone participates, every vote is counted, and everyone’s voice is heard ; where people from all walks of life can run for and win office, not just the wealthy and well-connected; where every eligible American has the right to vote; and where politicians are held accountable to fair, common-sense rules with tough enforcement of penalties.

What is our solution? Campaign finance reform in Illinois. We are pushing for reforms in Evanston, Chicago, and at the state level. It has been successfully implemented in New York City, Seattle, and various others cities, counties, and states across the nation. Now it’s time to strengthen our democracy in Illinois by providing opportunity, real choices, and an equal voice for all.

By signing this petition, you are expressing your support for campaign finance reform across our state. Make your voice heard, and let Illinois lawmakers know it's time they are held accountable.
