Fight for flood fairness for families!

David Maurstad, Senior Executive of the National Flood Insurance Program

FEMA is trying to make changes to the NFIP that would mean price increases for many families and doesn’t include our goals of fairness or mitigation. And, families struggling to get home will hit the deadline on their ICC funding this fall.

Meanwhile, Congress is debating changes to the NFIP which must be renewed in September. We need a flood insurance program that is fair, forward thinking and puts our families first, not one that lines the pockets of big insurance and helps big banks. It’s unforgivable that while we fought to get back home after Sandy, the insurance companies raked in $400 million in profit.

Please tell David Maurstad that FEMA cannot roll out changes without including our hard learned lessons *especially* as families still struggle with COVID. And, because COVID slowed construction down significantly - we need an additional 3 year extension to use our ICC funds.

Dear David Maurstad,

As New Jerseyans and Sandy survivors, we know what it’s like to live through a disaster. We also know what happens when our Federal and State programs become "the disaster after the disaster." We need a flood insurance program that is fair, forward thinking and puts our families first, not one that lines the pockets of big insurance and helps big banks. It’s unforgivable that while we fought just to get back home after Sandy, the insurance companies raked in $400 million in profit.

First, please extend the time limit for Sandy impacted families to use their ICC funds an additional 3 years.

Second, please stop or delay the roll out of FEMA 2.0 until it addresses our communities needs:
1. We need affordable Flood Insurance - rates are going up high and fast - we can’t afford to pay for flood insurance OR afford to lift our homes or mitigate to make rates cheaper!
2. Fund MAJOR mitigation efforts and increase ICC (Increased Cost of Compliance) coverage to from $30,000 to $100,000 AND allow us to access those funds to mitigate before a disaster. Why do we get ICC after we lose everything instead of before?
3. Cap compensation for Write Your Own (WYO) companies and create additional oversight measures for insurance companies in the program who systematically underpaid Sandy families.
4. Fund LiDAR Mapping technology in order to more accurately map flood risk so everyone one at risk for flooding knows they need insurance.
5. Taxpayers should not be paying legal fees for big insurance lawyers fighting against them in court.

Please take action on our behalf,

New Jersey Organizing Project
