Florida: Stop Gerrymandering in 2021

Florida members of the house and senate

This year, Florida along with other states are drawing new maps based upon the 2020 census. These new maps will directly impact the lives of Floridians with regard to policy matters on healthcare, housing, jobs, justice, and more. Unfortunately, it is already being reported that some Tallahassee lawmakers are attempting to subvert the process of redistricting by hiding data and preventing public testimony.

The last time redistricting happened, the judge in the case noted "Republican political consultants or operatives did, in fact, conspire to manipulate and influence the redistricting process...They made a mockery of the Legislature’s proclaimed transparency and open process of redistricting by doing all of this in the shadow of that process, utilizing the access it gave them to the decision-makers, but going to great lengths to conceal from the public their plan and their participation in it."

It should also be noted that it took the courts 6 years last time this happened to right the wrongs of gerrymandering in Florida, we can not wait another 6 years. We need a huge public outcry demanding that our Florida members of the house and senate stop partisan politics and draw fair and transparent maps.

Can you take (1) one minute and sign our petition to urge them to stand up for Floridians with fair redistricting?

Dear Florida Member of the House or Senate,

It has been reported that some Tallahassee lawmakers are attempting to subvert the process of redistricting by hiding data and preventing public testimony.

That’s not how our democracy is supposed to work. Voters should choose their elected officials, not the other way around. And any efforts by politicians to interfere with the process -- by using data that wasn’t intended for redistricting or drawing rigged maps that ignore communities’ voices -- can’t be swept under the rug.

We the People will not be excluded from the redistricting process or silenced by gerrymandering.

I am urging you to support full transparency with the redistricting process and commit to allowing public testimony as well as full data disclosure.

Thank you for your attention in the matter.
