Fossil Free Griffith - Petition

Griffith University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ian O'Connor

Globally we are seeing the ever increasing impacts of climate change. We have been seeing severe droughts, floods and an increase in cyclones while 2014 was the hottest year ever recorded. Despite the scientific consensus of anthropogenic warming and urgency to act fossil fuels are still being extracted and burnt.

It has been reported that in order to stay below the political goal for 2 degrees of warming we must move beyond fossil fuels and leave at least 80% of current reserves in the ground. Individuals, governments and institutions alike must divest their investment in order to avoid the worst impacts and to send a clear message to the fossil fuel industry they they can not get away with wrecking the climate.

Griffith University, despite having a sustainable reputation is likely to have millions of dollars investing in fossil fuel companies through a managed fund. We are calling on Griffith to stand up and be the sustainability leader it claims to be by introducing a policy which excludes fossil fuels from their investments. We are asking Griffith University to:

  1. Publicly divest from all fossil fuel investments currently held directly or in fund managers.
  2. Griffith to introduce a investment policy which screens out any further investment in the fossil fuel industry.

If you think Griffith University should be a leader sign the petition to show your support.
