Demand Freedom for Brandon and his Mother

Brandon Reyes, a well-known and much-loved member of the Grand Rapids community, was picked up by ICE on Wednesday Feb. 20, along with his mother. They are currently in a detention center in Battle Creek.

Brandon was targeted by ICE due to a low-level offense, a minor misdemeanor for which he successfully completed his sentencing. ICE staked out Brandon’s home and stopped him early in the morning on his way to work. He was targeted as part of a greater ICE raid operation, and his mother was picked up at the same time, solely for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Now Brandon is facing deportation and a repeal of his DACA status.

We demand that Brandon and his mother be released on bond immediately so that he can fight his deportation case from home, with his family. This yet another example of how ice tears families apart. They are facing weeks to months in detention.

Brandon moved with his mother from Mexico at age 6, and has lived in Michigan since 2003. He studied graphic design at Grand Rapids Community College, before working with HealthNet West Michigan, a health access organization. Active in in his local parish and youth group, he has always been a constant advocate for his community. He is outspoken about the injustices he, his family and community face. He lives with his mother, stepfather and two younger sisters age 9 and 11. His entire family are devastated that Brandon and his family member were stolen from them and are facing risk of deportation.

Honorable Judge,

Our community is writing on behalf of Brandon Reyes and his mother to be released on bond.

Brandon Reyes is a well-known and much loved member of the Grand Rapids community. Through his activism and community service he has been a leader through his job in public health, his activity in his Catholic parish and youth group, and his outspoken support for immigrant rights.

Brandon was detained by ICE as part of a targeted ICE operation due to a prior conviction of a misdemeanor for driving while visibly impaired. Brandon successfully completed his sentence for this conviction. However, this misdemeanor will terminate his DACA and put him at risk of deportation and he is now facing weeks to months in detention while we fight for his right to stay in the country. He has lived in the US since age 6 and considers Michigan his home.

We are requesting that both Brandon and his mother be released on bond so that Brandon can continue to fight for his right to stay in his home country, the US. Brandon has already served his sentence for his misdemeanor, and is now facing deportation. He deserves to be with his family during this time.

Brandon lives with his mother, who is detained with him, and stepfather and two younger sisters age 9 and 11. His younger sisters and stepfather are devastated to have two family members in detention. Brandon is very close with his sisters and they are extremely traumatized by his absence. Since their arrest, Brandon's family and entire community are suffering.

Your Honor, thank you for considering this letter as you determine Brandon’s case for bond.
