Tell the MD General Assembly: Our Community deserves a voice in our schools

Senator Mike Miller, Maryland Senate President; Rep. Michael Busch, Maryland House Speaker; Del. Jay Walker, Chair of the Prince George's County Delegation

It is time to restore our elected school board and put the choice back into the hands of voters. The Maryland State House Bill HB196 did not pass during the most recent legislative session, but the work is not over yet.

Our children deserve a quality education, and they deserve leaders who will put our school system’s needs above lining their own wallets with hefty political contributions that do not benefit the students they are supposed to serve.

Back in 2013, our elected county leaders pushed to pass a bill that undermined our power to govern our school board including: additional appointed members gave power to the CEO to make final policy decisions without board approval.

This powergrab has yet to yield any positive results for our students who still face maltreatment and grade changes. Worse, our school system leaders are bold enough to put up political contributions that could influence the folks who oversee their hiring decisions--a violation of the people’s trust.

It is time to restore our elected school board and put the choice back into the hands of voters. There is a bill in the Maryland State House that would help our County do just that.

Our children deserve a quality education, and they deserve leaders who will put our school system’s needs above lining their own wallets with hefty political contributions that do not benefit the students they are supposed to serve.

We are urging you to bring HB196 to a vote so that Prince George's County can restore their elected school board.
