Hold Trucking Companies Accountable

Michael Kors, Target and U.S. Dept of Defense

Michael Kors, Target, and the U.S. Department of Defense all have one thing in common: they outsource their U.S. port trucking and warehousing to companies that routinely violate U.S. labor laws in violation of their own Codes of Conduct.

Leading logistics firms California Cartage (Cal Cartage) and Intermodal Bridge Transport (IBT) are two of the worst lawbreakers. Both companies misclassify their port truck drivers as “independent contractors” to shift company business expenses onto drivers’ backs and to avoid paying for social security, workers comp, and disability – and to keep them from unionizing. Drivers at both companies, and warehouse workers at Cal Cartage, have filed multiple lawsuits and other claims to demand an end to wage theft, a safe workplace, and the right to form a union free from retaliation.

It’s time for Michael Kors, Target, and the U.S. Department of Defense to send a clear message to logistics companies like Cal Cartage and IBT that if they are out of compliance with their Codes of Conduct, and if don’t stop their lawbreaking ways then they will no longer be a legal vendor.

We stand with port truck drivers and warehouse workers who work for California Cartage (Cal Cartage) and Intermodal Bridge Transport (IBT), two logistics companies that you utilize at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

We are writing to express our deep concern over the numerous labor rights violations perpetrated by your vendors Cal Cartage and IBT, including misclassification and wage theft. The growing list of state and federal labor law violations determined by government and judicial officials also puts the concession license with the ports at risk because it requires compliance with all relevant laws to remain in good standing with the port. Furthermore, these violations are not permissible according to your Code of Conduct.

We request that you immediately investigate the labor law violations at your vendors Cal Cartage and IBT. Furthermore, we expect you to fully communicate your concerns to Cal Cartage and IBT.

Sincerely,
