Protect hotel workers from sexual assault

Big hotel chains and the anti-worker lobby groups they fund

Workers deserve respect from the companies they work for — not lawsuits.

In November, hotel workers won a ballot measure in Seattle to improve working conditions, including strict protections against sexual assault. But now the anti-worker lobby groups funded by the big hotel chains have filed a lawsuit. Apparently they'd prefer to not follow the law.

Even though an assault-free workplace ought to be a basic right. And even though Seattle voters passed the initiative by a vote of 77%.

This isn't the first time these lobby groups have tried to use the courts to block workers rights.

When transportation and hospitality  workers won a living wage in SeaTac, the same anti-worker lobby groups were there — filing lawsuits that kept workers from getting their wage increases for years.

And when fast food workers led the way to the nation’s first citywide $15 minimum wage law in Seattle, these same anti-worker lobby groups were there again — filing lawsuits that tried to block the raise from taking effect.

Enough is enough. Time for these chains to stop paying for lawsuits, and start paying their workers some respect.

It seems like every time workers win a new law to improve wages and working conditions, big hotel chains like Hilton, Radisson, Westin, Holiday Inn have their industry lobby groups try to block it in court.

First you tried to block living wages, they you tried to avoid backpay, and now you don’t want your workers to be protected from sexual assault?

It’s ridiculous how much money you are apparently willing to spend in order to avoid spending money on your own employees. It’s time to drop the lawsuits, pay a living wage, and provide your workers the basic health & safety protections they deserve.
