Illinois needs to properly implement Automatic Voter Registration

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White

Common Cause members won a hard-fought victory and brought Automatic Voter Registration (AVR) to Illinois with a unanimous vote in the legislature. This crucial win was set to add up to 1 million new voters to the rolls, making our democracy more accessible than ever.

But while AVR was supposed to be up and running smoothly before the November elections, the Secretary of State's office has made implementation unnecessarily complicated -- adding extra steps and forms that make registering to vote harder, not easier. This completely contradicts the goal of AVR and could discourage otherwise eligible voters from participating in our democracy.

Voters and activists in Illinois worked hard to pass AVR, and it's time that Secretary White stand up for the right to be heard. Add your name now and tell him that Illinois deserves REAL Automatic Voter Registration.

All eligible Illinois voters should be able to speak up at the ballot box -- and passing Automatic Voter Registration (AVR) in Illinois was a key step to ensuring that everyone can exercise their constitutional right to vote. Now, Secretary White must make sure that AVR is fully and properly implemented.
