Increase Nurse Staffing at CPS!

Chicago Board of Education

Nurse staffing in Chicago Public Schools is in a crisis.

Chicago schools have less than half the nurses recommended to provide for our students. A single nurse can be assigned to as many as six or seven schools, working with thousands of students. There are only 130 Certified School Nurses (CSNs) for over 500 schools, leaving nurses overworked and students underserved. Schools that used to have a fulltime nurse who knew their students and their health needs are now visited by a CSN or Health Service Nurse as little as once per week. These conditions prevent students from receiving special education services, risking their health in emergencies and have caused many great nurses to leave CPS in frustration.

We call on the Board of Education to:

1. Take immediate action to increase the number of CPS nurses.

2. Work with CTU nurses to improve working conditions, making recruitment of qualified staff easier during a nurse shortage.

3. Prioritize keeping nurses and school communities together in scheduling, protecting students’ relationships and care
