INVESTIGATE: Trump tried to steal the election in GA

U.S. Department of Justice

“So look, all I want to do is this: I just want to find 11,780 votes.” [1]

In January, the Washington Post released shocking audio in which then-President Trump made this demand of Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. Throughout their hour-long phone call, Trump repeatedly bullied, coerced, and even threatened Raffensperger -- insisting that the state’s election results be overturned.

And that call is just the tip of the iceberg. Trump and his allies spent months pressuring Georgia officials to flip the election in Trump’s favor -- trying to silence voters and spreading lies that incited the horrific January 6th attack at the Capitol.

The American people deserve a thorough investigation into this unprecedented attempt by a sitting president to hijack our democracy. And anyone who violated our nation’s election laws must be swiftly held accountable.

But right now, Raffensperger is trying to sweep it all under the rug. Common Cause urged him last month to refer this matter to the U.S. Department of Justice, so officials there could conduct an impartial investigation of potential federal crimes.

Instead, he has turned things over to Georgia’s own Attorney General, who -- as a leader of the Republican Attorney General’s Association, a group linked to the January 6th rally that devolved into an attack on the Capitol -- cannot be trusted to run an unbiased investigation.

If we want real accountability for potential federal crimes by Donald Trump, Lindsey Graham, Rudy Giuliani, Mark Meadows, and others -- the federal Justice Department must make this investigation a top priority. If you agree, add your name today.

After Donald Trump lost the presidential race in Georgia last year, he and his allies -- including Sen. Lindsey Graham, Rudy Giuliani, and more -- spent months shamelessly trying to get legitimate ballots thrown out so Trump could steal the state’s Electoral College votes for himself.

Common Cause has filed a complaint with the Department of Justice, calling for an independent investigation into this outrageous effort to overturn the will of the voters. We demand that this investigation is swift and thorough -- and that anyone who violated the rule of law is held accountable.
