We need a People’s Stay at Home Order:Iowa is one of only five states that doesn't have a stay at home order. On Saturday, Iowa occupied three of the top 15 metros areas in the nation with the highest average daily growth rate of cases.

Scientists and public health officials across the state have called on the Governor to issue a shelter in place order to keep Iowans safe. But Gov. Reynolds is ignoring science and putting Iowans' lives at risk by letting corporate leaders make decisions that result in outbreaks.  

Gov. Reynolds has shown that she is accountable to CEOs of meat packing plants and corporations, not everyday Iowans. But we know that we need a plan that puts people, our loved ones, and our communities before profits and the pockets of corporations.

We need a stay at home order that invests and works for everyday Iowans.

We need a People’s Stay at Home Order:

• Ensure every Iowan remains on their payroll through the crisis, even if their workplace shuts down.

• Give nurses, doctors, essential and frontline workers the PPE they need to keep themselves and us safe.

• Provide every person with an emergency monthly payment of $2,000.

• Make healthcare treatment and testing for coronavirus free for every person who needs it, including people of all abilities and preexisting conditions.

• Issue a 6-month moratorium on factory farms that pollute our air and water.

• Greatly increase our health care capacity to handle a surge in cases.

• Urge President Trump to use the Defense Production Act to mobilize resources.

• Publicly support to expand Unemployment Insurance and protect non-traditional workers (workers you earn tips, domestic workers, etc.)

• Pass a statewide ban on racial profiling to protect communities of color from overpolicing.

• A statewide mitigation plan led by public health experts, not CEOs.

The longer Gov. Reynolds resists a stay at home order and leaves mitigation efforts to CEOs, the more people will get sick, and the more risk we put our doctors, nurses, and frontline workers in. That makes us all unsafe.
