It's Time for a Fair Workweek for Philly Workers

Philadelphia City Council

All jobs aren't good jobs.

100,000 of Philly’s lowest-paid workers are being robbed of their freedom and families by scheduling policies that put corporate profits before people. An enormous slice of the workforce is being held back by lax regulations that let employers keep retail and service workers on a short leash -- constantly changing schedules and cutting hours.

We demand that Philadelphia City Council join the big cities and states across the country to pass and enact and enforce smart, fair legislation ensuring that workers get fair schedules and that employers hold up their end of the bargain.

Philadelphia didn’t become the poorest big city in the U.S. by accident. The city’s 100,000 retail and service workers -- mostly part-timers -- have been struggling with low pay and constantly-changing schedules. Far too many Philadelphians struggle with too few hours and unpredictable schedules that keep them in poverty and away from their families.

Philadelphia needs to join cities and states around the country that are guaranteeing a fair work week. It's time to pass Fair Work Week legislation, which will enact and enforce smart, fair legislation ensuring that workers get fair schedules and that employers hold up their end of the bargain.
