With less that 800 left in the wild, Tapanuli orangutan face having their Indonesian rainforest home ripped from beneath them -- by a British conglomerate that once smuggled opium into China back in the 1830s.

Now the family-owned Jardine Matheson group’s latest tradeable commodity is gold. One of its Indonesian companies is continuing to destroy rainforest in this precious ecosystem in Batang Toru, North Sumatra in the pursuit of gold -- driving the rarest great ape closer towards extinction.

Just in the past month, satellite images revealed an ongoing expansion of the Martable Mine into the heart of Tapanuli orangutan territory. But if we act fast, we can stop the mine’s expansion into rainforest areas and protect the orangutans and their habitat before it is too late.

Tell Jardine Matheson to STOP clearing rainforests and protect the Tapanuli orangutan habitat NOW.

A Jardine Matheson subsidiary invested in a huge gold mining operation on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. Since then, Jardine has been expanding the Martabe mine into Tapanuli orangutan forest habitat - putting the survival of this species at greater risk of extinction.

Jardine Matheson and its subsidiaries must stop expanding the Martabe Mine into rainforests and work with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) on a plan to protect the rarest great ape and its habitat.
