Jewish Chronicle, time to do teshuva and apologise to British Muslims

Stephen Pollard, Editor of the Jewish Chronicle

As Jews, we know our safety only comes from solidarity with all marginalised groups.

That is why it is unacceptable that a newspaper like the Jewish Chronicle, which repeatedly demanded unequivocal solidarity from British society in the fight against antisemitism, has published a piece from Melanie Phillips which denies and belittles anti-Muslim prejudice in our society.

We know our Muslim siblings are feeling fearful in this moment. Our Prime Minister, who has repeatedly and unapologeticly made Islamophobic remarks, was returned to power with a huge mandate last week. We commit ourselves to taking their fears seriously and defending them.

Sadly, the Jewish Chronicle has a long history of publishing material that both dismisses the concerns of British Muslims and encourages racism and prejudice towards them. This is a shameful legacy and demonstrative of institutional Islamophobia in the organisation.

This election result must mean that our community continues to hold it’s institutions to account. We will not tolerate this kind of bigotry being disseminated.

We call on the Jewish Chronicle to:

1. Take down the article

2. Apologise to the Muslim community

3. Commit to doing teshuva (repentance) by no longer publishing articles by Melanie Phillips, or any other articles which engage in or deny Islamophobia
