Job Security and Union Rights for UCLA Spanish and Portuguese Teaching Faculty

Dr. Maarten van Delden, Chair UCLA Department of Spanish and Portuguese

We demand that UCLA Spanish and Portuguese end their disgraceful maneuver around the Unit 18 contract and the basic job security protections it provides to excellent lecturer faculty in the department. We call on you to end the abusive Faculty Fellows Program and to hire proper, unionized post-doctoral scholars and lecturers to cover the departments teaching and research needs.

Dear Chair van Delden,

Teaching faculty at UCLA deserve the protections of a union contract. Unit 18 Lecturers recently won basic job stability provisions including the right to be rehired before external hires are considered for multi-year contracts.

In response to these new provisions, Spanish and Portuguese has chosen to expand its use of non-union, assistant adjunct professors whose employment will be terminated after one year and who will be required to seek employment elsewhere as part of their job duties.

This practice is a disgraceful maneuver around the Unit 18 contract and the basic protections it provides to excellent lecturer faculty. We call on you to end the abusive Faculty Fellows program and to hire proper, unionized post-doctoral scholars and lecturers to cover the departments teaching and research needs.
