"If it's wrong to wreck the climate, then it's wrong to profit from that wreckage" - 350.org

Climate change is the biggest threat to our economy, environment, health and human rights. The International Panel on Climate Change has stated that to avoid the most dangerous of climactic impacts we must remain below 2 degrees Celsius. Our temperatures have risen 1.4 degrees since 1880, and if we continue on as 'business as usual', we will hit 2 degrees within 30 years. Climate change is no longer an issue of the future: the climate is changing now. From impacts on South Australia and Tasmania's recent bush fires to increased coral bleaching events in Queensland, 2016 is a more urgent time than ever to move away from dirty fossil fuels, and onto a clean energy future.

That's why, across the world people, universities, super funds and banks are uniting to join the divestment movement by taking their money out of fossil fuels. Put simply, divestment means removing your investments from something for financial or moral reasons. It's a movement that unites us as people with one louder, more powerful voice. Divestment has empowered the people in past movements such as campaigning against tobacco companies and will prove a crucial tool for removing the fossil fuel industry's social license to operate.

That's why we are bringing the international divestment movement here to Deakin. We need your help to hold Deakin accountable to its commitments to sustainability, while ensuring we have a safe climate. By signing this petition to demand Deakin removes its financial investments in the fossil fuel industry, we can align as students, staff, alumni and academics to shape a positive future.
