Keep Castle Street car-free

Cardiff Council Leader and Transport Cabinet Member

Last year, Castle Street was transformed from a dirty and unpleasant road into a space for people to enjoy the city centre.

But this week, Cardiff Council's Cabinet have decided to re-open Castle Street to all traffic. They claim air pollution has been displaced to residential areas - but have no evidence to back this up. Caro Wild, who made the decision, was even quizzed by a fellow Labour councillor on the evidence.

This is no way to run our city during a climate emergency. Narrowing pavements to create space for cars makes a mockery of the declaration of a climate emergency by Welsh Government.

We call on Council leader Huw Thomas and Caro Wild (Cabinet member for Transport) to keep Castle Street car-free. Future decisions to manage traffic should be based on real air pollution monitoring in affected communities.
