Keep the Daily Hampshire Gazette at Home

Newspapers of New England, Inc.

The Daily Hampshire Gazette, Amherst Bulletin, and Valley Advocate are about to lose their press — and we need you to stand with us.

Newspapers of New England has announced massive layoffs of all our press and distribution colleagues in order to outsource their work to mass media holding company Gannett.

Laying off our 29 colleagues (including 25 union members) during the middle of a global pandemic is morally reprehensible. What’s more, Newspapers of New England is using the services of Seyfarth Shaw -- the same notoriously anti-union law firm that defended The Weinstein Company and fought Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers in the 1970s -- to negotiate the terms of the layoffs.

If the company is not willing to keep this crucial printing and distribution work in Northampton, then we envision a sale to local ownership committed to community journalism. Hedge fund owners and other news conglomerates are not those people. Stand with the Pioneer Valley NewsGuild as we create a sustainable path forward for independent media in the Valley.

If you’re with us in this fight, please sign the petition below and help us #KeepTheGazetteAtHome for another 233 years to come.

We stand in opposition to these devastating layoffs.

The shuttering of the press is a huge loss for the paper and the community.

We want a different future for our local papers.
