LAUSD give permission for students to leave school to participate in the global climate strike on Sept 20.

LAUSD (Los Angeles Unified School District) Board of Education and Superintendent Beutner

Per their September 12 announcement on Twitter and elsewhere, New York public schools has given permission for students to leave school to participate in the global climate strike on Sept 20. Students will need parental consent. Younger students can only leave school with a parent.

We call on LAUSD to do the same: encourage student participation in this vital moment of action and change. According to the LAUSD Sustainability Initiative, "LAUSD aims to be the most sustainable and environmentally-friendly large urban school district in the Country." As the second largest school district in the nation, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) with over 600,000 students in kindergarten through twelfth grade at over 1,000 schools, LAUSD  has the power to stand in solidarity with its own students as well as those around the world who understand that we are facing a critical tipping point, and that sustainability and environmentally-friendly initiatives should extend to active student participation, most specifically in the upcoming Global Climate Strike.

Dear Dr. McKenna, Ms. Garcia, Mr. Schmerelson, Ms. Goldberg, Ms. Gonez, Dr. Vladovic and Superintendent Beutner,

My child is in the xth grade at xxx School. NYC public schools just announced that they will excuse any absence on that day. I am asking that LAUSD gives permission for students to leave school to participate in the global climate strike on Sept 20. Following NY public schools' lead, students would need parental consent, and younger students could only leave school with a parent.

Thank you for your time and attention to this matter. I look forward to your response.

Sincerely,
