Limehouse Bridge Bike/Ped Access

Devri DeToma, P.E., Project Manager, Charleston County Transportation Development + SCDOT, District 6 + Charleston County Council

As part of the Main Road and U.S. Highway 17 Improvements Project led by Charleston County, we are paying close attention to bike and pedestrian access, particularly since this intersection connects easily to the West Ashley Greenway and other bike/ped infrastructure. 420 of you signed this petition when we first created it several years ago. In late 2024, Charleston County Council voted to award the Main and 17 project contract, but bike/ped access on or adjacent to the Limehouse Bridge was cut. Since then, we have been coordinating with County staff and councilmembers to restore bike/ped access to the project.

Because the corridor improvements are meant to improve mobility and capacity, ignoring robust bicycle and pedestrian improvements would be incredibly shortsighted. Please add your name to our list of supporters who want a multi-use path on the Limehouse Bridge. We can't risk another situation where a bridge was retrofitted, and access for people on bikes and foot was denied!

If you cannot recall whether you already signed this petition, sign again! We will remove duplicates before presenting signatures to the County and state.

Please note: When we close the petition, signatures will be sent to Charleston County and SCDOT, which makes them part of the public record. Additionally, if you would like to be added to Charleston Moves' email list, please click HERE.

I am writing to request the provision of a multi-use path for people on bikes and foot on the Limehouse Bridge between West Ashley and Johns Island. This is a vital connection that would allow safe passage between West Ashley, by way of the Greenway and Bees Ferry Road, and Main Road on Johns Island, where the County is assessing zoning, land use and safety improvements for all users. Please incorporate this multi-use path into the chosen Segment A alternative. We cannot continue to upgrade to streets and bridges that do not address the needs of those on bikes and foot. It is vital to our community's safety and accessibility, while reducing traffic congestion and our impact on the environment, such as flooding and air quality.
