Raise the wage of IHSS providers in LA county to a living wage of $20

Hilda Solis, First District, County of Los Angeles Supervisor

A living wage is a human right! $20 is a living wage in Los Angeles County Invest in IHSS caregivers

IHSS providers need your help. They have been on the frontlines of the pandemic, working long hours caring for our loved ones. So why aren't we treating them like the essential workers they are? We're calling on the County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors to put an end to the low wages and disrespect caregivers face by implementing a $20 minimum wage for IHSS providers. This wage increase will help IHSS providers who are most often women of color, care for themselves and their families without the heavy financial stress they're currently facing. It will show them that our leaders value their work, and see how essential they truly are. Will you join us? Sign the petition and call on the board of supervisors to set a $20 minimum wage now!

In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) providers are essential to the workforce in Los Angeles County. They provide a valuable service to our community—keeping disabled and elderly individuals in their home and out of facilities. Currently, IHSS providers earn a wage of $16 per hour. This is not a living wage in Los Angeles County. An increase in wages to $20 an hour would not only help to lift IHSS providers—mostly women of color—out of poverty, but according to SEIU Local 2015 (2021), it would also:

• generate an additional $2.1billion in economic output in the county
• support nearly 12,000 more jobs
• generate an additional 4700+ million in labor income
• and result in $293 million more in state and federal tax revenue.

I would like to ask you to consider authoring a motion to raise the wage of IHSS providers to $20 per hour which could positively impact IHSS providers and regional economic growth.

Thank you for your consideration.
