Make Burlington Safe for Walking and Biking

Burlington City Council

To all supporters of making Burlington safe for walking and biking:

In spring 2016, the Burlington City Council will vote on the city's first-ever "Walk-Bike Master Plan." Done right, this plan will be a blueprint for making Burlington the kind of place where anyone can bike and walk anywhere in safety and comfort. This plan has been a long time coming, and it’s time to get it done.

Burlingtonians of all ages want our city to be “Better by Bike.” We want riding on our city's streets to be just as safe as riding on our beautiful lakeshore bike path. We want to be able to send our kids off on their bikes without worry. More broadly, we want a city with a 21st century approach to mobility that puts safety and choice first.

A 2015 survey conducted by AARP Vermont showed that a majority of Burlingtonians 45 years and older would be extremely to very likely to walk or ride a bike more if there were better crosswalks and separate bike lanes. And only 29% feel that there are currently enough bike lanes for safe biking. Burlington clearly needs better streets for biking and safer crossings for walking!

Will you speak up for vibrant streets that are safe and welcoming for everyone? Investments in walking and biking have a tremendously positive impact on the local economy and community.

Local Motion, AARP Vermont, and the Burlington Walk-Bike Council

P.S. We are asking for your email, your mobile number, and your street address so we can connect you with opportunities to speak out for a transformational walk-bike master plan. We will not add you to any other lists or contact you for anything else without your permission (unless you are already on Local Motion’s list, in which case you will receive our regular communications). Thank you.

To the Burlington City Council:

I am writing to you to ask you to do three things to support the Walk-Bike Master Plan:

1. Communicate to city staff and to fellow councilors that you want to see an ambitious plan that includes a specific timetable for implementation

2. Vote for the plan when it comes before Council and direct staff to implement it in accordance with the schedule outlined in the plan

3. Actively support and vote for operating and capital budgets as needed to implement the plan, including both dedicated funding for bike infrastructure and increased staff capacity dedicated to walk-bike issues at the Department of Public Works

This issue is very important to me. I will follow with interest any community and Council meetings where the plan is discussed and voted on, and hope I can count on your support for the plan at those meetings.
