Mayor Thao and Oakland City Council: Support students and families during a teacher strike in Oakland!

Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao and members of the Oakland City Council

Mayor Sheng Thao and the Oakland City Council must put pressure on OUSD to settle a fair contract for all OUSD teachers now. A strike is avoidable if the district comes to the table with reasonable proposals that meet the real needs of our educators, students and families. Should a strike occur as a result of the District’s failed bargaining efforts, Mayor Thao must do the right thing for Oakland families and direct that city-managed recreation centers and public libraries be made available for OUSD students for the duration of the strike, as was done during the 7-day teacher strike in 2019.

Earlier this week, the Oakland City Council drafted a resolution directing the City Administrator to issue a memo similar to that of 2019, making rec centers and libraries available ahead of a potential teacher strike that could begin as early as next week. Mayor Sheng Thao then intervened, citing budget concerns, and the resulting new draft resolution urges OUSD to bargain in good faith with the Oakland Education Association, but removes any reference to the city opening rec centers and libraries to Oakland students in the event of a strike.

OUSD students deserve the support of the city government during a labor action that aims to improve the working conditions of their teachers - which are, ultimately, their own learning conditions. The undersigned Oakland caregivers, teachers, and community members, urge Mayor Thao in the strongest possible terms to stand with Oakland students. We recognize that the City Council stands ready to support Oakland students and teachers, and we strongly urge them to amend the new draft resolution to include the language about city rec centers and libraries contained in the original draft.
