Minnesota's Governor Needs to Stop Line 3

Governor Mark Dayton & Minnesota's Next Governor

In June, the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission made the illegal and offensive decision to permit Line 3, a tar sands pipeline that would carry 760,000 barrels per day of oil from Alberta, Canada, across northern Minnesota and treaty territory of the Anishinaabe people, to Superior, Wisconsin.

Constructing Line 3 would be an attack on indigenous rights, threaten critical sacred wild rice beds and the headwaters of the Mississippi River, and expand fossil fuel extraction at a time when the climate crisis is demanding we transition to renewables instead. Minnesota's Governor has an important role to play to help stop Line 3.

We have a real shot to stop this pipeline, but we need to delay construction until the legal case can be brought. Between now and the end of the year, we need to keep the pressure on both the current Governor, Mark Dayton, and whichever candidate is elected in November to make sure they know we expect them to do everything in their power to #StopLine3. I am calling on you to do everything in your power to stop the Line 3 tar sands oil pipeline. The Public Utilities Commission made an immoral and illegal decision when they approved the permits for Line 3, and we’re counting on you to take bold action to correct this injustice.

The record on Line 3 is complete, and the truth is obvious: a new tar sands pipeline would be a danger to Minnesota, and an assault on indigenous rights, our lakes and rivers, and our climate. The PUC failed to respect the robust record built through the process, and approved Line 3 over the loud and explicit objections of state agencies, multiple intervening tribes, the Youth Climate Intervenors, environmental and indigenous rights groups, and 94% of the public comments.

We appreciate how the Department of Commerce has shown up so far, and we’re going to need you and all your agencies to fight harder than ever to stop this pipeline. Please stand with the young people and tribal nations who have fought this project every step of the way, and do everything in your power to ensure Line 3 is never built.
