MRU Rally for Alberta Student Day of Action

MRU Students

Deep and ongoing budget cuts have dealt critical blows to our education. The Alberta government canceled the province-wide tuition freeze, cut a three-year-total of $690 million from post-secondary institutions’ budgets, eliminated student employment programs, increased student loan interest rates and slashed financial aid, all while cutting the corporate tax rate for Alberta's biggest corporations.

Now, our tuition is skyrocketing – about 22.5% higher in coming years, pricing out those who cannot afford the increase and subsequent debt burden. With the average Alberta undergraduate student graduating with $31,000 of debt, this will make a bad situation even worse – limiting our ability to start families, buy homes, and participate in the local economy. It has even compromised our safety in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The government is making us pay thousands of dollars more every year to get less.

Students across Alberta will be rallying on their campuses. We can take the first step in showing the united political and economic power students have by safely rallying on our campus for the October 29th Alberta-wide Student Day of Action at 12pm on the East Gate Lawn.

We, the undersigned Mount Royal University students, endorse holding an Alberta Student Day of Action Rally at 12pm on October 29th on the East Gate Lawn at Mount Royal University.

We call on the Alberta government for a reinstatement of a tuition freeze and a reversal of postsecondary budget cuts.

We support gathering at this rally with Covid-19 safety precautions such as masks and other PPE.
