President Joe Biden repeatedly promised to broadly cancel student debt. As the President is deciding whether to provide critical relief for millions, or not, we urge him to meet with borrowers directly.

The Student Debt Crisis Center, key advocacy organizations, and millions of borrowers have illustrated the impact of the $1.9 trillion student debt crisis. As the President won the White House on his promise to cancel student debt, he must talk with borrowers directly.

Last year, a group of borrowers accompanied by Senator Schumer, Senator Warren, and NAACP President Derrick Johnson spoke with Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. Sec. Cardon emphasized that “behind every case, there's a family, there's a person, there's a story … there's work to be done."

To date, Sec. Cardona is the highest-ranking Biden Administration official who has met with borrowers directly to discuss the student debt crisis and debt cancellation. At the time, he said, "I'm committed to this, and your stories have strengthened my resolve to do as much as I can to support you and students like you.”

President Biden, we urge you to sit down and meet with student debt borrowers yourself. Every borrower has a unique story to tell, and to come to a final decision on cancellation, it is key to meet with them. Forty-five million Americans deserve a seat at the table.
