Oregonians need a Fair Work Week

Oregon State Legislature

Everyone should have the right to know when they’re going to work and how many hours they’re going to get. You can’t make a budget if you can’t predict your paycheck because your hours change dramatically from one week to the next. You can’t plan for child care, or spend time with your family when you don't know when you'll be called in to work. You can't build a better future when you don’t have the flexibility to go back to school, get a second job, or start your own business. And you can't live your life on a few days’ notice: insecure schedules mean it's almost impossible to make time to help your kids with their homework, participate in your community, or even just make an appointment.

Tell your legislator that Oregon working families need fair and flexible schedules to care for themselves and their families. It's time to pass a Fair Work Week and make our time count.

Oregon working families need a fair work week. Even as our economy recovers, many working families are being left behind. That's because more and more regular, full-time jobs are being replaced by low-wage, hourly jobs where employees don't know if they can expect enough hours to make ends meet, or a workload that never ends. Today's unfair scheduling practices, just-in-time notice of work hours, unpaid on-call, and last-minute shift practices create instability for working moms, dads, and their families.

No one can plan their lives on just a few days notice. It's impossible to make a budget, plan for child care, commit to college classes or career training programs, or even make a medical appointment when you don't know your schedule.
