Pass Board Bill 31 Community Control Over Police Surveillance

St. Louis Board of Aldermen

Across the country, the use of surveillance technology is on the rise. This includes facial recognition, the ominous invention of police robot dogs, and in St. Louis, two thwarted attempts to place spy planes above the city 18-hours per day.  Surveillance technology is frequently problematic. With the increase of police departments using facial recognition technology, there have been several misidentifications sending innocent people to jail.

BB 31 is a commonsense measure that sheds light on how these technologies are used, places checks on technologies residents do not wish to see used in their communities, and applies oversight of this emerging field to ensure police accountability. This ordinance would allow St. Louis residents to protect their privacy rights and applies oversight to this emerging field to ensure police accountability. This ordinance would allow St. Louis residents to protect their privacy rights and measure the impact of surveillance technologies.

Tell the St. Louis Board of Aldermen you support Board Bill 31 and they should join 22 other cities in passing this important legislation to protect its residents from government overreach and abuse.

Dear Alder,

As a St. Louis city resident, I am asking you to vote yes on Board Bill 31. Board Bill 31 (Community Control over Police Surveillance) would require public oversight of surveillance technologies. This ordinance would allow St. Louis residents to protect their privacy rights and measure the impact of surveillance technologies.

We should have a voice in how our public safety tax dollars are used. The community should know if the surveillance technology implemented is effective and without racial bias. We deserve to have our civil liberties protected by creating transparency while promoting public safety.

Thank you,
The residents of St. Louis city
