PETITION IN SUPPORT OF AFSCME 1724 AND FAIR CONTRACT

Sarah Medary

Sign this letter in support of AFSCME Local 1724 representing workers at the City of Eugene.

AFSCME Local 1724, the labor union that represents the largest number of City of Eugene employees, is currently engaged in negotiating a new contract. AFSCME expects open and sincere dialog, honest give and take, and good faith negotiations. Frustratingly, genuine and frank conversations about important issues have been mostly one-sided. City Management is preferring to reject proposals with few, if any questions, and are bound up in a short-sighted adherence to an overly formal bargaining style. AFSCME aims to improve working conditions, increase operational efficiency and service delivery in this time of need and have been met with stall and delay tactics.

Over the past several years Management has increased their salaries generously without oversight or public review. Dozens of City Managers are making $100K or more per year. Now that it is time to renew the workers' contract, they claim there’s no money. AFSCME deserves honesty at the the table and to receive fair wages and benefits.

AFSCME 1724 workers keep our parks clean and beautiful, maintain our streets, ensure our wastewater system returns clean water to the Willamette River, keep our sewer system running, clean and maintain our airport, and offer help of all kinds at our public library, to name a few of the many services we provide to make sure the city we live in flourishes. AFSCME workers deserve a contract that’s negotiated thoughtfully and with care, one that supports working families and helps bolster Eugene’s economy.

Your signature on this petition, to City Manager Sarah Medary’s hands, indicates your support for working people at the City to be treated fairly during contract negotiations.

AFSCME Local 1724 workers deserve a fair and equitable contract!
