Petition: Protect Our Oceans from Climate Change

Presidential Candidates and Coastal-Area Elected Officials

The ocean is an amazing place! Oceans are full of unique creatures, and the fisheries they sustain provide food, jobs, and recreation for many people. Though these ecosystems are fragile, the U.S. has done a great job protecting them with some of the best fishery management policies in the world. But now there is a new threat to face.

Climate change is threatening all the work we have done to keep our fisheries sustainable, and countless fish and wildlife species are at risk. We need strategies that will allow our fisheries to be resilient, and that protect oceans and the creatures that live there from the massive impacts of warming waters, acidification, and more.

Sign this petition and ask presidential candidates, as well as current elected leaders that are in a position to take action on climate and fisheries, to protect oceans and keep fisheries strong as part of their climate action plans.

Our oceans are in crisis. Climate change is already threatening our coastal fisheries, which in turn threatens critical sources of food, jobs, and recreation sources for a significant number of Americans. Warming waters and acidification are disrupting ecosystems, causing fish stocks to move, and populations to decrease despite successful efforts we have made to increase fishery sustainability in the past.

The U.S. has some of the world’s best fishery management policies, and has some of the most abundant fish populations in the world. Unfortunately, climate change is threatening all the work we have done to keep our fish stocks at sustainable, and we must do more.

I urge you to be a champion for our oceans. Please keep our fisheries strong as part of your climate plan, and to propose solutions that will keep our oceans healthy for the long term.
