PETITION TO RECONSIDER THE PLAN TO REZONE MANHATTAN'S GARMENT DISTRICT

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, Manhattan (NY) Borough President Gale Brewer, New York City Council, and the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC)

New York City Council is currently reviewing a plan to rezone the famed Garment District in Midtown Manhattan. Under this plan called the Fashion Manufacturing and Garment Center Strategy, a large scale initiative will be introduced to minimize (and possibly eliminate) the protections started in the 1980's to keep the Garment, Fashion and Textile Industries in the Midtown West area. This new plan from the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) seeks to move the Garment District to the Industrial City area of Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

We the undersigned members and allies of the Theatrical Wardrobe Union Local 764, IATSE implore Mayor Bill de Blasio, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, New York City Council, and the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) to reconsider the effects of this plan. The proposal to relocate these businesses poses a great challenge to the Broadway, Film and Television communities' ability to create/maintain our various technical crafts. We ask that the NYCEDC continue to conduct further surveys and impact studies that include the workers of the Entertainment Industry.
