We, the citizens of Philadelphia, call on Mayor Jim Kenney and City Council to divest from Wells Fargo, and other banking institutions that support financing the Dakota Access Pipeline and private prison companies, commit massive customer fraud and engage in predatory and discriminatory lending, and take money from our public schools.

Wells Fargo is a major financier of the Dakota Access Pipeline, an oil pipeline project that has destroyed sacred tribal lands, endangers the clean water supply of the Sioux and millions of others, and has resulted in human rights violations of Indigenous peoples and water protectors. Wells is also a top funder of private prisons, profiting off of the mass incarceration of Black and Brown people and immigrant communities. Wells also finances the toxic Philadelphia Energy Solutions oil refinery in South Philly, which poisons our air and water and threatens the health and safety of low income communities of color. Unacceptable!

In Philadelphia, Wells Fargo has taken millions of dollars from the public schools and the city, all while kicking more Philadelphia families out of their homes than any other bank. They also have a long history of discriminatory, racist lending practices. Most recently, Wells was found guilty of corruption and fraud when it was discovered that they were establishing millions of fake customer accounts in people’s names without consent. This had a negative, direct impact on Philadelphia employees and bank customers!  

Wells Fargo should not have our taxpayer dollars. Major cities all over the United States from Seattle to East Orange, New Jersey are divesting from Wells. Philadelphia should be next!
