Now more than ever…CA needs single-payer healthcare. A recent New York Times editorial succinctly summed up the current state of affairs: “America has created the most expensive, least effective healthcare system in the modern world, and the most vulnerable Americans have been paying for that failure with their lives since long before the coronavirus came to town.”

The current pandemic has heightened the life-and-death urgency of reforming our disjointed and dysfunctional healthcare “system,” which too often prioritizes profits over patients.

California has a chance to do better by its residents—and lead the nation on healthcare reform. Governor Gavin Newsom ran for office on establishing a single-payer universal healthcare system in our state, and he established the Healthy California for All Commission to study how to get there. But healthcare reform efforts in California have been derailed many times before, and the for-profit insurance companies and Big Pharma are doing all they can to quash reform.

This time can be different—if we, the people, let our leaders know we want real healthcare reform. We need more than Band-Aids to fix our expensive yet underperforming and unjust system. We need a single-payer healthcare solution that will cover all residents in the state, saving money while most importantly, saving lives.
