Protect Measure P for Law Enforcement Oversight

Sonoma County Board of Supervisors

Almost two-thirds of Sonoma County voters supported Measure P in November 2020 to bring greater transparency and accountability to the Sheriff’s Office. Key elements of Measure P are currently under threat because of a decision by a commission of four appointees that rules on state employment issues. We call on the Board of Supervisors to protect our vote and appeal.

What's at stake?

This decision threatens the power of the Independent Office of Law Enforcement Oversight (IOLERO) to conduct full, impartial investigations. Politics rather than facts may guide investigations.

The County has had to spend millions of YOUR taxpayer dollars to settle excessive force and wrongful death lawsuits against the Sheriff’s Office. The killings of Andy Lopez, Jeremiah Wright and David Ward, and numerous instances of brutality against community members have greatly damaged the community’s trust in the Sheriff’s Office to protect the public without independent oversight.

We all benefit from oversight, especially communities of color. We cannot let four people overturn the will of 166,483 people.
