We are journalists and media workers who work at Radio Free Asia, a Congressionally-funded and independent news organization that brings truth to people living under authoritarian rule across Asia.

On March 14, 2025, President Trump signed an executive order aimed at dismantling the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM), the backbone of American international broadcasting. This action effectively gutted Radio Free Asia, Voice of America, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, and others, newsrooms that together reach over 400 million people across the globe.

At RFA, the impact was swift and devastating. More than 200 U.S.-based employees, over 75% of our staff, were furloughed. And over 90% of freelance contributors lost their contracts, including journalists operating in high-risk regions. Our work and our mission is now at risk.

And yet, our commitment has not wavered, because we are union members of the Washington-Baltimore News Guild, part of The NewsGuild-CWA.

For decades, we’ve delivered unfiltered news to places like North Korea, China, Myanmar, Tibet and Vietnam, places where access to truthful reporting can mean the difference between hope and despair. Our investigations have exposed China’s abuses in Xinjiang, the erasure of Tibetan culture, the crackdown on dissent in Vietnam, and the civilian suffering in post-coup Myanmar. We have also given voice to defectors, dissidents and the disappeared.

We’ve garnered global attention for our investigative reports on human rights abuses in Xinjiang under the Chinese government, the concealment of COVID death tolls, the erasure of Tibetan culture and language and the ongoing civil conflict in Myanmar. In countries like North Korea, China, Tibet, Xinjiang, Vietnam, and Myanmar, where freedom of expression is repressed, we serve as a vital bridge for democracy and human rights, amplifying the voices of those who would otherwise remain unheard.

We do this work not for profit, but because we believe in something bigger: the right to be heard, to be informed and to live free from fear and lies.

This isn’t just about funding, it’s about America’s role in the world. RFA was created by Congress to support press freedom where it’s needed most. That mission is not partisan. It is patriotic.
