Protect the Trees at Malcolm X Park

Mayor Michelle Wu

In Roxbury, our community suffers from high asthma rates and other lung diseases. Green space is crucial for quality of life -- as well as limiting extreme heat and air pollution, which make asthma even worse. But dozens of trees were already cut in Malcolm X Park, and many more are in peril from heavy equipment.

Mayor Wu, only you can stop the deforestation currently underway in Malcolm X Park. How can the City of Boston congratulate itself on an Urban Forest Plan while simultaneously not protecting and preserving the existing trees in the Urban Forest in Malcolm X Park in Roxbury?

The Parks and Recreation Department approved a park design that included cutting down dozens of trees, many 60-70 years old, some 100 or more years old. Dozens of trees were cut down, others were improperly pruned and are being subjected to backhoes, dump trucks and other heavy equipment which are unnecessarily and repeatedly driven over. Construction vehicles are parking on tree roots all over the hill in many areas that are not under construction. Trees die when their roots are crushed and torn.

There are more unnecessary paths currently being cut. Paths that cut across more tree roots. This is creating permanent damage to our beautiful natural landscape. We need our trees. Trees produce oxygen and clean our air. Asthma rates are high here. We are trying to breathe. The legacy trees cannot be replaced.
